TERF
June 2017
The Textile Experimentation Research Facility (TERF) is a continuation and adaption of The Textile Network. TERF is a live/make building targeting the developing Maker Movement in the Dogpatch District of San Francisco. TERF targets those interested in the fashion industry, specifically in the experimentation of high performance textiles through a series of unique conditions created by an elaborate test track.
TERF contains a series of unique programmatic spaces to allow for a complete “in house” experience. This includes exhibition space, a micro factory, studio and lab space, and on-site housing. In addition to these spaces, TERF has an elongated track wrapping through the building. On the first two levels, this track is designed for slow circulation. As the track winds through the building, the speed gets faster. This higher speed and more intense slopes is to allow the testing of textiles.
The facade system also proved to be a challenge for this project. The idea of a textile factory lent itself to a textile facade, one that undulated along three sides to allow varying amounts of light to enter the building. This facade system became a veil for the predominately glass facades, mitigating light and heat gain.
This project was designed using carefully sized programmatic blocks that were then stacked upon one another to allow space for the track and create unique double and triple height spaces. All the blocks are interconnected through the track and “fast track” stairs and elevators that anchor the building structurally.
This project was designed in collaboration with Erin Morato. All images featured were generated by Mackenzie Bailey.
